RULES
1.  The contest is limited to students in grades 7-12.
2.  All essays should be typed, double spaced, and not exceed four (4) pages of content material.  Essays will be evaluated based on content, originality, oganization, grammar, and spelling.  A bibliography is required but will not be counted as one of your content pages.  You must also have a title page.  The title of your essay must be typed at the top of the first page of
the body of your essay.  Your Civil War topic must be chosen from the list at the bottom of this page.
3.  Your title page should include the following information:
         1.  Your essay title centered
         2.  Your name and full home address (street/apt. #, city, state, zip code)
              NOTE:  this is the only place that your name should appear on your essay
         3.  Your home phone number with area code
         4.  Your principal's name
         5.  Your current grade
         6.  Full address of your school
         7.  The deadline for all submissions is:
              April 30, 2002  (Essays postmarked after this date will not be accepted)

TOPICS
YOU MUST CHOOSE ONE OF THE BELOW LISTED TOPICS
1.  Choose a specific Civil War unit of any size and assess its performance during a time period of your choice.
2.  Compare how prisoners were treated by both North and South, or write about the day in the life of a prisoner, or his experiences as a prisoner?
3.  What role did music play during the Civil War?
4.  Describe the experiences of a wounded or sick soldier.
5.  Pick one branch of the army and explain its importance.  Examples-infantry, artillery, cavalry, engineers, etc.
6.  Describe the uniforms and equipment of either the infantry, cavalry, or artillery and how they changed over the course of the war?
7.  How were the people on the homefront effected by the war?
8.  Choose a military or political leader and explain their role during the war?  Exclude Presidents Lincoln and Davis.
9.  Describe the role of either Indians, women, Blacks, or a specific ethnic group during the Civil War?
10. Choose a naval topic and explain its importance.
