Center is a one-of-a-kind facility. Funded by corporate, foundation and individual
donations and staffed entirely by volunteers, the Library is open to the public and features one of the largest collections of Civil War material in
existence, with over 2,000 bound volumes and hundreds of periodicals, all
related to the American Civil War. The Library is open every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1
p.m., and by appointment by calling 732-326-1611. Or, you can visit the
Library on the Internet at www.roberteleecwrt.org.
Public Relations campaign. of the Library and Research Center through an extensive marketing campaign that has included newsletter distribution, the mailing of several hundred flyers to local public libraries, press releases and information about upcoming programs on several local access channels.
Membership in INFOLINK. The Library and Research Center recently received acceptance into a regional library cooperative that has over 700 members in a four-county area in New Jersey.
Awarded a CAPES survey. Through the application and approval of a grant through the state Historical Society, a professional librarian spent several hours studying the operations, cataloging, and collection. Several recommendations were made and the Library was commended for several areas in which it has been efficient and successful. Recommendations from the assessment will be used to guide the Center's plans for the future.
Corporate support. As a match for a contribution made by one of our volunteers, Home Depot awarded the CWLRC a $300 grant. McGraw-Hill Company also made a similar contribution.
$1,000 challenge grant. In January of 1998, a supporter challenged the Library to raise $1,000 within three months and it would be matched. With the dedication and support of many donors and volunteers, the Library raised over $1,000 with time to spare. The result: over $2,000 for the Library to acquire new books, develop new programs, print more brochures, and continue its work!
Development Committee formed. The Library's Development Board, a group of library, history and education professionals who are willing to donate their time and talents to help the Library's planning and development, meets quarterly to develop strategies and implement plans.
Events program initiated. The Library has developed an Events Program that features interesting discussions about Civil War books and presentations on Civil War related topics, and best of all, they're free and open to the public.
Book Loans. In 1999, the Library began lending certain books to members of the R.E. Lee CWRT. This provides our patrons with an additional service and another incentive for membership in the R.E. Lee CWRT!
Foundation grant. Thanks to a generous grant from the Tomlinson
Family Foundation of Morristown, NJ, the Library was able to expand its
collection of primary source material by acquiring the complete set of
the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS) and
the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies.
With the addition of this material, the Library has become one of a very
few sources of this information in the tri-state area.
America's Civil War The Civil War Library and Research Center is currently preparing for the taping of a cable series about the American Civil War.
"America's Civil War", as the series is called, is a thirteen episode cable series co-created by the Civil War Library and Research Center and is being produced by TPS Digital, which has been in the entertainment field for over twenty years. The series is designed to provide insights into various personalities, battles and aspects of the Civil War that enthrall and engage everyone with even a passing interest in this unique time in our nation's history.
Several cable stations in the New Jersey market have already expressed an interest in showing the series. Because of the tremendous amount of cable subscribers in the market, the potential for a viewership in the hundreds of thousands is possible. Therefore, the series is offering underwriting sponsorship opportunities to companies interested in a unique marketing opportunity while showing their support for a worthy cause.
Sponsorships are being considered. For information
about how you can participate, please call the Library at (732) 326-1611.
